Q&A with Leon Mazzone
1. How did you get involved in cycling?
My dad was probably my main influence. He competed in downhill mountain biking when he was younger, so racing has always been in the family. Once I was at an age where I could start to learn how to ride a bike, I did, and at three years old, pretty much as soon as the stabilisers came off, I was racing at the local BMX track with my older brother, Tom. From there on I have raced different disciplines until now where I solely concentrate on road cycling.
2. What has been your greatest cycling achievement?
My greatest achievement to date has to be competing for the Isle of Man in the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and 2022. It’s an incredible experience being able to represent your country.
3. What motivates you to keep training and compete to the best of your ability?
Trusting the process more than anything. Each year that I compete, I have been able to progress and improve my results. I am motivated to reach a higher level and I know that one day it will click and fall into place.
4. What are your aspirations in cycling for 2023 and beyond?
I have a few specific goals that I would like to tick off this year, the main one being to win a UCI race. Last season, I was so close to making it happen and I’m incredibly determined to win this year.
5. Growing up, who was your all-time inspirational sports person?
As a fellow Manxman, Mark Cavendish has been a great inspiration throughout my whole career. His Tour De France race wins speak for themselves. I would have never imagined when I was younger that I would go to the Commonwealth Games being a part of the Isle of Man squad that he was so it goes to show anything is possible.
6. What advice would you give to a young, aspiring cyclist?
One piece of advice would be to enjoy it and don’t take it too seriously when you are younger - just go out with your mates have fun. I’d also suggest trying different disciplines. I used to really enjoy racing cyclocross in the Winter after most of the year on a road bike.
7. What interests do you have outside of cycling?
In all honesty, I’m a bit of a car fanatic. I love learning about cars and can watch YouTube videos on them for hours! I also like to get out in the countryside from time to time as it’s a very calming and relaxing.
8. Where did you hear about Beet It Sport?
I heard about Beet It Sport a couple of years ago as I was at a race and saw a couple of guys were using it. Last year I saw it online and I was intrigued to give it a go!
9. How has Beet It Sport helped your performance?
I started using Beet It Sport nearing the end of the 2022 season. I definitely felt more efficient when I used it on the lead up to my races, which I was impressed with. I’m very excited to be an ambassador and being able to use and try the new products out.
