Q&A with Kim Conley
How did you get into athletics?
I joined a club team when I was 11 because softball felt too boring—I wanted to run around more!
What has been your greatest achievement?
The 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials. In the final lap of the 5000m, I surged from fifth to third, clinching an Olympic spot by 0.04 seconds. That race not only qualified me for London but also launched my professional career.
What’s your preferred running distance and why?
I love the road 5K—still short and fast, but without circling the track twelve and a half times.
Did you have a role model early in your career?
Yes, Sara Hall. She was a senior at my high school when I was a freshman. She taught me discipline and goal setting—and she continues to inspire me today with her marathon success.
What motivates you to train and compete at the elite level?
I love running and the process of training, improving, and working toward goals. I wasn’t a top athlete starting out, but my passion has carried me to the elite stage.
What advice would you give young athletes?
Start with a foundation of love. Dedication is key, but when you truly enjoy running, it won’t feel like a sacrifice.
What do you enjoy outside of running?
Reading, writing, and spending time with my dog, Smokey. When training allows, I also enjoy hiking and mountain biking.
Describe your perfect weekend.
Traveling somewhere new, finding a beautiful spot for a long run, and finishing the day with a great meal.
Why Beet It Sport?
My performance nutritionist, Will Benitez, recommended a beet supplement. Beet It Sport stood out with the highest concentration of dietary nitrates, making it the easy choice.
What are your goals for 2021 and beyond?
Right now, I’m focused on earning a spot at the Tokyo Olympics. Beyond that, I plan to transition to the marathon with my sights set on 2024.
