Q&A with Swimmer Jess Podger

1. How did you first become interested in swimming?
I participated in a school swimming gala, and one of the PE teachers suggested that I join a swimming club.

2. What is your greatest sporting achievement so far?
Representing Great Britain at a junior international level.

3. What are your plans and ambitions for the rest of this year and beyond?
I have Nationals at the end of this month, which is my last meet of the season, so my plan is to perform at my best there. In the long term, I aim to represent Great Britain at a senior international level.

4. Who was your biggest sporting inspiration growing up?
Rebecca Adlington was always someone I looked up to!

5. What’s the best thing about competing in swimming?
I love the competitive environment at meets and also enjoy cheering on my teammates and friends as they achieve their goals.

6. What motivates you to train and perform at your best?
I like proving to myself that I can push through tough moments and see what I’m capable of. I set small goals in each session or race, so even if I don’t reach my main target, I can still celebrate progress along the way.

7. What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue swimming competitively?
Enjoy the journey. Progress isn’t always linear, so even when setbacks occur, find joy in the process.

8. If you could be a professional athlete in any other sport, what would it be and why?
I’d be a tennis player because of the highly competitive atmosphere and the opportunity to play in iconic tournaments like Wimbledon.

9. Describe your perfect weekend.
Training 6–8 a.m. on Saturday morning, followed by a long nap and fish and chips for dinner. Sunday would include a big lie-in, a full English breakfast, and a relaxed day (maybe some shopping too!).
