Q&A with Jake Exotic

How did you get involved in ultra/trail running?
Back in 2018, I entered a 15.6-mile trail race in Woodland Park, CO. I wasn’t prepared, but I threw myself into it anyway—and somehow, I “snap, crackled, and popped” through the race. That first experience hooked me on the unpredictable adventure of trail running.

What’s your favorite and least favorite part of trail running?
Trail running is full of unexpected challenges. Falling is the worst part—one second you’re thinking about music, the next you’re face down in the dirt. But the freedom and unpredictability also make the sport unique and rewarding.

What’s your greatest sporting achievement so far?
I don’t consider myself to have had any huge achievements yet. With injuries and low weekly mileage compared to top athletes, I’ve had my fair share of setbacks. But given the challenges I’ve faced—working multiple jobs and living abroad without support—I’m proud of the effort I’ve put in.

What are your aspirations for 2022 and beyond?
My biggest goal is simply consistency—running enough to build towards podium finishes in races under 50K. If I can hit 40 miles a week, I know I have the potential to compete.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I’m a triplet, originally from Manchester, England. My accent often gives me away, but I like surprising people with my background.

What tips do you have for aspiring trail runners?
Don’t overthink it. Trail running gives you freedom—walk, run, or skip. It’s not about pace or Strava stats; it’s about enjoying the present moment.

Where would you most like to trail run?
I miss Manchester. As chaotic as it is—dodging traffic and weaving through city streets—it’s home, and I love running there.

Describe your perfect weekend.
It starts with simply waking up! Add in some fun outfits, a Blue Moon or two, a shot of Beet It Sport, a short run, and maybe a call with my family—it doesn’t take much to make me happy.

Why do you use Beet It Sport products?
I first tried Beet It Sport in 2016 before a trail half marathon in the UK. I ran my fastest time ever (74:52), which stood as the quickest trail half marathon that year. Since then, Beet It has been a staple in my race-day routine.
